Mahango Find Some Exotic Birds!

Mahongo Reserve, part of Bwabata National Park, boasts Namibia’s highest bird count. The park is a true gem for independent travelers. Unlike Etosha, Mahango is very green. The park is fed by the Okavango River System and features large populations of elephant and hippo, as well as giraffe, zebra and various species of antelope. It even has the big cats, albeit in smaller numbers than in other parks. We spent two wonderful afternoons driving around the park, taking occasional breaks to rest in the shade, read, or take quick naps in the back of our pick up truck (the bakkie!). …

Smoke on the Water

Manu and I spent three wonderful nights camping at the Guma Lagoon in Botswana. This was the Okavango Delta experience that we were looking for, complete with crocodiles, hippos, elephants and a maze of channels leading to hidden lagoons, swamps and hippo pools. As evening closed in on the second day, Manu and I sat on the deck overlooking the lagoon, watching small trails of smoke in the distance while chucking to ourselves about the fire we had experienced at the farm during our first days in Namibia. While we spoke, the wind picked up, turning grey smoke signals into …

The Chobe River and Victoria Falls!

On Friday we crossed the border into Botswana, heading towards Kasane, a pretty but touristy place on the Chobe River, part of the Zambezi River system that flows into the Victoria Falls. The Chobe is a bit odd in that it actually flows in both directions depending on the water level. Here we visited Chobe National Park in Botswana. Instead of hippos, this time we camped right next to a family of elephant, which grazed just meters from our tent on the other side of a very fragile looking electric fence. I am not convinced that this security measure was …

Great Rivers

It has been wonderful to see green again. Thanks to the highlands of Angola, the Okavango and Zambezi systems remain flooded even in the middle of the dry season, opening up a world of hippos, elephants and colorful birds in an area that actually receives little to no rainfall this time of year. At Ngepi Camp on the Okavango River north of the panhandle, we spent 3 wonderful nights tenting above a dozen hippos. Here we spent one last night with Doug and Jamie before taking them to the Botswana border the following morning. We took an evening boat cruise …

Etosha Part 2

More photos have now been added to the Namibia Wildlife gallery. Thanks for all positive feedback!

Etosha means White

First day in Etosha included 17 lions and 8 rhino. I could probably leave this entry at that and it would still impress! After paying our park and camping fees at the entrance, we came across a pride of lions at midday, panting in the sweltering sun just one kilometer in. This group included 8 ladies! The day went nuts from there on out with scores of elephants, giraffe, and springbok. Back at the campsite, we had access to a floodlit watering hole. Over beer and wine we watched the rhino saunter in. Day one was simply incredible.

Africa!

Where did we leave off? Namibia is very photogenic. Our friends Doug, Jamie and Laura joined us in Windhoek and we have been cruising around together, taking in the coast, the dunes, the desert and the National Parks. So far we have visited Swakopmund, Damaraland and Etosha National Park. When we have needed a rest, we have stayed at a farm owned by a relative of Manuela’s called Bergplass. It is located near Outjo in the Paresis mountain range (the highest of which is 1800m above sea level). When we first heard farm, we assumed it would be a rather …

Namibia! very dry…

By the way, Manu and I took a detour to Namibia via New Delhi. The regularly scheduled itinerary will continue in November. More news on this later… We arrived at Bergplaas, a farm belonging to a family member of Manuela’s. It is unbelievably dry here but the bird life is amazing and very colorful. The farm is extremely comfortable and remote. This morning thing quickly got interesting as we earned our merit badges in fire fighting. A small blaze set to clear some brush quickly got out of control leaving. We rushed out to help, clearing brush and stamping out …
